Provides a critical analysis of the
factors that threaten biological diversity in the biosphere and the
consequences on biological processes and quality of life. Prerequisite: BSCI
30360. This
course is designed to provide an introduction to the field of conservation
biology. First, we review of the
historical and ethical background underpinning the current conservation
movement. Next, we examine the causes
and consequences of biological extinctions. Also, we study the contributions
of theoretical biology to conservation biology. We examine the negative impacts of humans
on biological diversity and the role of conservation biologists to mitigate
this impact. Furthermore, we examine
ecological concepts that are utilized in conservation management practices,
with an emphasis on monitoring and maintaining biodiversity. We use case studies to survey the
possibilities and the problems of applying conservation principles in the
real world. |
